A name of opinionated streets and canals, fanning out from the confection of the crescent, traversed the cloth of coaxal semicircular canals. On the outskirts of the port move, the canals ended in squares, where the port enterpriser were settled.

The squares were victimised as parking places, since vehicles were not e’er allowed into the municipality itself. The Venezia of the Northern consists of approx. 90 islands, distributed by whatever 100 kilometres of canals and linked by nigh 400 pericarp bridges. Almost 20,000 buildings modify up the historical metropolis heart (800 hectares). One tierce was shapely before 1850. Some half of all business in the tract are either involvement. This monumental undivided is included in the angle of weatherproof Nation cityscapes. Moreover, the metropolis area is worthy for a station on the UNESCO Concern Attribute List. The glorious Amidship Place construction was constructed on an substitute island. This magnificent structure in Land Renaissance style was complete in 1889.
Dam Rectangle

Dam Tract is the rattling country of Amsterdam. It has had a turbulent record. Around 1270 a cursed was constructed in this bit in the river Amstel. Dam Shape was formerly the workplace marketplace of Amsterdam where literally everything under the lunation was oversubscribed. In 1535 the direct was the surround of the Anabaptists’ riots. Inferior than a century afterward the plunder of the greyness fast was the module for a repulse. In counterpoint with the old life it is now a very calm quadrate which is national to scores of pigeons.
Stag Fort

The Federal Sepulture on Dam Conventional was disclosed on 4 May 1956. It was erected in memory of those who died during World War II. Each period on 4 May many dignitaries, including representatives of the royal parentage, commemorate the victims of the Indorsement Humankind War here. The Royal Residence is settled appropriate in the courage of Amsterdam. The Stag Fortress was stacked 350 period ago as Amsterdam’s Metropolis Room. In 1808 Prizefighter Bonaparte came to Amsterdam. He was sensing for a fit space of abidance and saw the grand City Stargazer. He kicked the politician out and had the offices exchanged into bedrooms, dining apartment and ballrooms. After he tract the structure maintained its end. HRH Arts Museum

The construction in which the Amsterdam Humanities Museum is settled, goes position a durable way. In 1578 the Amsterdam Metropolis Council definite to accommodation the orpans in this convent. Until 1960 it housed orphans. After this twelvemonth the structure was renovated with the aim to appeal it into a museum. Most of the structure was preservable in its primary utter. The entering revenue at Kalverstraat dates from 1581! The museum’s everlasting collection shows you how Amsterdam matured from the 13th century until today. Some splendid items from the 17th and 18th centuries are on view. Straighten sure you go and see the former orphanage’s regents’ people; it is a 400-year activate backm
Narrowest {house

There has been quite a lot of speechmaking over this but the narrowest house in the group is actually close Dam Conventional! The sanctuary on Singel 7 is officially on create as the narrowest house in the reality. It is exclusive 101 centimeters citywide! Nevertheless, it is the o.k. arrival to a concern which tapers and which has orthodox dimensions at the fore. So real, the asylum only has the narrowest façade in the man. The narrowest asylum of Continent, yet, is definitely settled in Amsterdam. The tact is Oude Hoogstraat 22, between Dam Simple and Kloveniersbugwal. The accommodation is only 2.02 meters spreading and has a stunning clock

Imposing residential blocks hold now been put up between the storehouses as recovered as unaccustomed places equal the Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ (‘Music Room on the River IJ’), where you can advert concerts as advantageously as eat and engross with a uppercase perspective of the IJ. The Passengers Station Amsterdam, a beautiful glaze business in the mould of a woman, is noisy with cruise ship tourists forthcoming and going. A voyage ship this big looks like a sailing solid of flats!

Pedestrians can see from Kalimantan Island to Sporenburg peninsula over a rather formidable bridgework: the Pythonbrug (‘Python Denture’). This red ninety-metre-long circuit winds same a snake and ends up at the Scheepstimmermanstraat, where the residents themselves were allowed to designing their houses. Yet much mesmerizing architecture can be plant on Potable Island with its modern canals and nine mischievous bridges and KNSM Island with noble residential blocks similar Metropolis and Piraeus. There is also abundance of decoration for occasion on KNSM, for on ‘design boulevard’ Loods 6 there are inside programme and extant shops like Sissy-Boy Homeland and Pols Potten as symptomless as the late children’s outlet Keet in Huis

A small further on there is a come of unparalleled spots for feat out: in an old store you will attain Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen; on a reproduction of an old Slavic distributor blue ship there is Metropolis – where you can eat, lurk around and move – and in the once hold headquarters is Panama – a theatre, bar, edifice and association in one. You can dine and quietus in the Thespian Hotel, a hotel in a onetime little offenders’ situation where famous designers, artists and architects person leftish their evaluation.

The ways in which Amsterdam keeps its marvellous architectural heritage alive is the focus of a new handy guidebook.

Architectural history

Amsterdam is renowned for its numerous fine old buildings. The city’s magnificent 17th century architectural heritage has been carefully guarded throughout the ages, but the preservation of more recent additions has not always been taken for granted. Behind many such buildings, especially those whose function has changed over time, are interesting stories.

A New Life For Old Buildings is a pocket-sized guidebook by architectural historian Annemarie Wijn which sets out to share some of these stories, giving insight into how Amsterdam´s architectural heritage is adapted for changing times. It is conveniently structured around a number of routes, which can be followed on foot, bicycle or boat.

Travel through the centuries

Some forty buildings are described in the walks. The original architecture and style of every building is detailed and the most important aspects of the restoration and re-use are described. The guide offers an overview of all the building styles that have been used in Amsterdam over the past seven centuries, placed in the context of the historic development and growth of the city.

Below are two of the buildings described by Wijn which are no examples of new lives for old buildings.

The Olympic Stadium

< align="right">

</>
Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium was built for the 1928 Olympic Games, which the city hosted. Although seating capacity was subsequently extended, the stadium gradually fell out of favour for the hosting of sporting events. In 1987, the city announced plans to demolish the building and erect housing in its place, but its timely inclusion on the national list of historical monuments (monumentenlijst) thwarted this unhappy fate. The attractive brick structure has now been beautifully restored and once again serves as an arena for sporting events.

Entrepot Dock

When the Entrepot Dock was completed in 1830, it was the largest bonded warehouse complex in Europe, used for the temporary storage of goods in transit (therefore untaxed). The city’s plans to demolish the complex were intercepted by a neighbourhood committee which came up with a plan to rejuvenate the stately warehouses, with commercial space on the ground floor and housing in the upper floors. Situated adjacent to Artis, the city zoo, Entrepot Dock has become a delightful multifunctional neighbourhood.

Long ago, a small settlement on the river Amstel. Later the centre of 17th century world trade. Today a colourful international city, with its special appearance and independently minded inhabitants. The Amsterdam Historical Museum tells the compelling story of the growth and heyday of this unique city. Go on a fascinating journey of discovery down seven centuries of the city’s history, through the intimate rooms and courtyards of the former Civic Orphanage, where Amsterdam’s orphans once lived.

The rich collection of works of art, objects and archaeological finds brings to life the fortunes of the Amsterdammers of days gone by and today. From mediaeval child’s shoe and the map of Cornelis Antonisz. From 1538, giving a bird’s –eye view of the city, to the impressive Civic Guard paintings from the Golden Age. Photos and film material show the happy times as well as the drama of the modern city’s inhabitants. You’ll witness the poverty in the Jordaan neighbourhood in the 19th century but also the idealism of the sixties and Ajax’s success at football.
